- ItemOpen AccessA new museum for an ancient land : Patras University Science and Technology Museum
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Περιοδικά - Μουσείο Επιστημών & Τεχνολογίας(2000) Theologi-Gouti, Penelope; Θεολόγη-Γκούτη, ΠηνελόπηThat university museums have a major role to play in contemporary life and are far more than the fortuitous outcome of random collecting is amply illustrated by the project of Patras University. Located just outside the city of Patras with a view over the Gulf of Corinth to the mountains of central Greece, it lies on a self-contained campus of about 240 hectares and is now the third largest institution of tertiary education in the country. Its decision to create a Science and Technology Museum was seen as vital to its mission as a major venue for scientific research and knowledge. - ItemOpen AccessAddressing the retention gap in MOOCs : towards a motivational framework for MOOCs instructional design
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - Μουσείο Επιστημών & Τεχνολογίας(EARLI, ) Herodotou, Christothea; Mystakidis, Stylianos; Μυστακίδης, ΣτυλιανόςExisting design schemes of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) usually focus on pedagogy, assessment and technology and rarely take into account learners’ experience and motivation. Drawing from the success of quest-based initiatives, gamified web platforms, and multi-user digital games, this paper introduces an innovative motivational framework for MOOCs instructional design coined as Open Quest Framework (OpenQuest). The framework is grounded on established motivational theories such as the Self-Determination Theory and Situated Motivational Affordance. It features specific motivational mechanisms including, quests and narration, reputation systems, progression mechanisms, multiple learning pathways, well-designed feedback and social elements, that can be used to enhance learners' engagement and reduce attrition rates in MOOCs. - ItemOpen AccessAffective relationships between users and libraries in times of economic stress
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - ΒΚΠ(2014-01-07) Giannopoulou, Angeliki; Tsakonas, Giannis; Γιαννοπούλου, Αγγελική; Τσάκωνας, ΓιάννηςAcademic libraries are considered as key factors in the educational system of a country and strong pylons for the economic and societal development. During the current economic recession, libraries have been struck by severe budget cuts that have forced them to shrink and to reconsider services to the end users. Important questions that have been raised in countries, such as Greece, which has been in the eye storm of the economic downturn and has witnessed severe societal changes, include how libraries respond to this change of conditions, how they improve their service level and how they minimize user dissatisfaction. Moreover, one of the key questions is what is the range of substantial or symbolic interventions that can improve users’ affective relationship with the libraries? The study aimed to measure the opinion of academic libraries users on four main criteria categories, namely cost, space and atmosphere, personnel behavior, and facilitation of collaborative work, and to reflect the level of affective relationship of users with their libraries. The study provides representative findings from all Greek academic libraries and shows that libraries are considered as spaces that facilitate pleasant reading and studying, as well as efficient collaborative work. Library users are in overall satisfied by the personnel behavior and productivity, but they also believe that there are margins for further improvement of its knowledge, while they think that the cost of services should be revised and echo the current situation. The findings of the study can assist library administrators to define the range of interventions and to prioritize them in a period of limited resources. - ItemOpen AccessAn Ontological Representation of the Digital Library Evaluation Domain
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Περιοδικά - ΒΚΠTsakonas, Giannis; Papatheodorou, Christos; Τσάκωνας, Γιάννης; Παπαθεοδώρου, ΧρήστοςDigital library evaluation is a complex field, as complex as the phenomena it studies. The interest of the digital library society still remains vibrant after all these years of solidification, as these systems have entered real-life applications. However the community has still to reach a consensus on what evaluation is and how it can effectively be planned. In the present article, an ontology of the digital library evaluation domain, named DiLEO, is proposed, aiming to reveal explicitly the main concepts of this domain and their correlations, and it tries to combine creatively and integrate several scientific paradigms, approaches, methods, techniques, and tools. This article demonstrates the added value features of the ontology, which are the support of comparative studies between different evaluation initiatives and the assistance in effective digital library evaluation planning. - ItemOpen AccessARLEAN : an augmented reality learning analytics ethical framework
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Περιοδικά - Μουσείο Επιστημών & Τεχνολογίας(MDPI, 2021-07-30) Christopoulos, Athanasios; Mystakidis, Stylianos; Pellas, Nikolaos; Laakso, Mikko-Jussi; Μυστακίδης, ΣτυλιανόςThe emergence of the Learning Analytics (LA) field contextualised the connections in various disciplines and the educational sector, acted as a steppingstone toward the reformation of the educational scenery, thus promoting the importance of providing users with adaptive and personalised learning experiences. At the same time, the use of Augmented Reality (AR) applications in education have been gaining a growing interest across all the educational levels and contexts. However, the efforts to integrate LA techniques in immersive technologies, such as AR, are limited and scarce. This inadequacy is mainly attributed to the difficulties that govern the collection and interpretation of the primary data. To deal with this shortcoming, we present the “Augmented Reality Learning Analytics” (ARLEAN) ethical framework, tailored to the specific characteristics that AR applications have, and focused on various learning subjects. The core of this framework blends the technological, pedagogical, and psychological elements that influence the outcome of educational interventions, with the most widely adopted LA techniques. It provides concrete guidelines to educational technologists and instructional designers on how to integrate LA into their practices to inform their future decisions and thus, support their learners to achieve better results. - ItemOpen AccessAssessing use intention and usability of mobile devices in a hybrid environment
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - ΒΚΠ(2012-03-03) Veronikis, Spyros; Tsakonas, Giannis; Papatheodorou, ChristosDuring the last decades many information providers, such as libraries, have been collecting, organizing and delivering information in both print and digital format, forming a hybrid information environment. However, exploration of a hybrid information environment does not result in a unified seeking experience, which exploits most effectively the available resources. This paper aims to identify the main factors that influence the adoption of wireless, mobile devices (e.g., smartphones) as a means of integrating the information seeking process in hybrid envi- ronments. Therefore it presents a prototype system and an evaluation study that provides an insight about the services design. - ItemOpen AccessDeep and meaningful e-learning with social virtual reality environments in higher education : a systematic literature review
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Περιοδικά - Μουσείο Επιστημών & Τεχνολογίας(MDPI, 2021-03-09) Mystakidis, Stylianos; Berki, Eleni; Valtanen, Juri-Petri; Μυστακίδης, Στυλιανός; Μπέρκη, ΕλένηDeep and meaningful learning (DML) in distant education should be an essential outcome of quality education. In this literature review, we focus on e-learning effectiveness along with the factors and conditions leading to DML when using social virtual reality environments (SVREs) in distance mode higher education (HE). Hence, a systematic literature review was conducted summarizing the findings from thirty-three empirical studies in HE between 2004 (appearance of VR) and 2019 (before coronavirus appearance). We searched for the cognitive, social, and affective aspects of DML in a research framework and studied their weight in SVREs. The findings suggest that the use of SVREs can provide authentic, simulated, cognitively challenging experiences in engaging, motivating environments for open-ended social and collaborative interactions and intentional, personalized learning. Furthermore, the findings indicate that educators and SVRE designers need to place more emphasis on the socio-cultural semiotics and emotional aspects of e-learning and ethical issues such as privacy and security. The mediating factors for DML in SVREs were accumulated and classified in the resultant Blended Model for Deep and Meaningful e-learning in SVREs. Improvement recommendations include meaningful contexts, purposeful activation, learner agency, intrinsic emotional engagement, holistic social integration, and meticulous user obstacle removal. - ItemOpen AccessDeep meaningful learning

Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - Μουσείο Επιστημών & Τεχνολογίας(IATED, ) Mystakidis, Stylianos; Berki, Eleni; Valtanen, Juri-Petri; Μυστακίδης, ΣτυλιανόςOpen Education (OE) is a distance learning approach that was strategically chosen by the European Commission (EC) to encourage cost-effective training, upskilling and reskilling of large population groups and workforce with speed and flexibility. Institutions and businesses design and offer Open Online Courses (OOCs) to address skill gaps, organizational and societal needs. OOCs and especially Massive OOCs (MOOCs) are suffering from high rates of attrition, which is attributed to various factors such as learner isolation and lack of motivation to complete the course. Recommendations to address the retention gap in MOOCs include adopting a participation-driven approach, using game design techniques in the courses’ pedagogical design and supplementing the predominant asynchronous learning paradigm in MOOCs with synchronous learning activities and virtual meetings. The University of Patras (South Greece) organized an innovative, motivation-enhanced Big Open Online Course (BOOC), the first of its kind in Greece, with title “Open Workshop on Information Literacy”. During the course, over three hundred (300) participants acquired information literacy skills using available open learning environments and the three-dimensional virtual immersive learning environment Second Life. In this paper, the authors describe the instructional approach based on Problem-Focused Education (PFE) and Game-Based Learning (GBL), the participants’ results and the course outcomes, and the necessary pre-requisites for successful outcomes. Further, the participants’ feedback, evaluation outcomes and lessons learned are discussed. In summary, the participants achieved their set learning goals, experienced a community of practice atmosphere and appreciated the variety of active learning modes. The open publication mode of most learning activities facilitated social agency that lead to additional motivation. Finally, the course demonstrated that the effective use of virtual immersive learning environments for rich, synchronous learning, both formal and informal, can enhance OOCs. - ItemOpen AccessDeveloping methods for extending repository services to increase the accessibility of OA documents in Library and Information Science
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - ΒΚΠ(2011-09-28T06:36:52Z) De Robbio, Antonella; Mornati, Susanna; Peset, Fernanda; Subirats, Imma; Tsakonas, Giannis; Τσάκωνας, ΓιάννηςE-LIS is established, managed and maintained by an international team of librarians and information scientists. Currently it is the largest international repository in the LIS field featuring a collection of more than 11.500 full text OA documents. In the mid of 2010 the demand to revise certain facets of the E-LIS organization and operation became profound for several reasons. This revision was channeled through the seeking and structuring the appropriate synergies with experienced, as well as innovative organizations. The synergies cover a range of issues, from organizational to legal and then to technical issues. The outcomes of these synergies are expected to enhance service delivery and to increase the repository’s interoperability level. Strategically these synergies are expected to help E-LIS to safeguard its reliability and to continue growing steadily. - ItemOpen AccessDigital Scholarly Publishing and Archiving Services by Academic Libraries: The case study of University of Patras
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - ΒΚΠ(2010-07-07T05:51:04Z) Georgiou, Panos; Tsakonas, Giannis; Γεωργίου, Πάνος; Τσάκωνας, ΓιάννηςDuring the last years, the dramatic changes in electronic publishing landscape have created new roles and changed the traditional ones. Libraries nowadays have capitalized their experience and knowledge in information technology and electronic publishing to undertake such activities, while they spearhead the campaign for Open Access spreading within academic communities. The Library & Information Center (LIC) of the University of Patras (UoP), Greece, has been playing an active role in promoting Open Access in Greece. Since 2007, LIC has been experimenting with OA publishing practices and tools within the framework of various R&D projects. Two out of the major results of these efforts are: - the “Pasithee” e-publishing platform - the “Dexamene” digital archive for Greek scholarly journals Both platforms are based on OJS-Open Journal Systems e-publishing software. The two installations are appropriately modified to meet LIC’s publishing and archiving requirements respectively. Currently two journals are being hosted in each platform, all four belonging in the Humanities, while LIC is in negotiations with more publishers and editorial teams to host their journals in LIC’s services accordingly. In this presentation we focus on the: - technical and managerial key issues of the development and operation phases, - services and procedures, - adopted business model, - technological, procedural and legal issues and problems that were raised from working together with publishers, editors and authors, and - future plans for improving and upgrading our e-publishing services in an integrated institutional platform to cover all kinds of publications and data types (monographs, conference proceedings, teaching material, bulletins, magazines etc.) The paper concludes with a succinct presentation of the Directory of Greek Digital Resources, a pilot infrastructure developed by LIC, which indexes and presents digital publishing initiatives in Greece and aims to become a formal registry for Greek scientific resources in digital format. - ItemOpen AccessDigital scholarly publishing in Greece

Δημοσιεύσεις σε Συνέδρια/Ημερίδες - ΒΚΠ(2010-05-24T20:43:26Z) Koumoutsos, Konstantinos; Mitrelis, Angelos; Tsakonas, Giannis; Κουμούτσος, Κωνσταντίνος; Μητρέλης, Άγγελος; Τσάκωνας, ΓιάννηςDigital repositories are considered essential information tools for scholarly communication. Their acceptability and extensive use by communities and institutions, as well as the users’ commitment in self-archiving, highlight the need for developing alternative channels of communication to expose scholarly productivity. Furthermore, the digital repositories community is interested into transforming them into viable, reliable and useful systems. This interest is primarily expressed by intense research activity, including - among the others - the evaluation and the usability of the technological solutions that support these services. On an institutional level, digital repositories are systems supported by physical organizations, such as libraries, which undertake many tasks in order to enable a variety of processes associated with these systems, such as submission, editing and access. In this paper, we present a multifaceted evaluation initiative that aimed at the redesign of University of Patras’ institutional repository, namely ‘Nemertes’. ‘Nemertes’ is operating on a DSpace installation and the ‘Theses and Dissertations’ collection was placed at the center of evaluation as the most important collection accommodated in the service. Emphasis was given to key processes held inside the repository by conducting surveys and interviews with typical classes of users. In order to collect data from these sources three different studies were held. First the quality of Submission process inside the physical and the digital space was evaluated through a questionnaire survey, which was addressed to people who had earlier submitted in the ‘Theses and Dissertation’ collection. Secondly, the information retrieval processes and the interface were evaluated by Human-Computer Interaction savvy students using the usability heuristics principles. Finally, the Editing processes and the quality of the delivery of services were assessed through interviews with the librarians that support the service. The findings of these studies point to areas that the system can be improved and help to eliminate the barriers that prohibit the service to be upgraded and host new collections. The areas identified concern both the way of delivering the service and the operation of the system. While the contextual parameters make the generalization of the findings about the service more ambiguous, the findings concerning the system performance and the interface intuitiveness validate the results of previous studies, such as the case of terminology, the affordances and the effectiveness of search interfaces. It is anticipated that the findings of the study can be further exploited by organizations with similar repository services and technological infrastructures. - ItemOpen AccessExploring usefulness and usability in the evaluation of open access digital libraries
Δημοσιεύσεις σε Περιοδικά - ΒΚΠTsakonas, Giannis; Papatheodorou, Christos; Τσάκωνας, Γιάννης; Παπαθεοδώρου, ΧρήστοςAdvances in the publishing world have emerged new models of digital library development. Open access publishing modes are expanding their presence and realize the digital library idea in various means. While user-centered evaluation of digital libraries has drawn considerable attention during the last years, these systems are currently viewed from the publishing, economic and scientometric perspectives. The present study explores the concepts of usefulness and usability in the evaluation of an e-print archive. The results demonstrate that several attributes of usefulness, such as the level and the relevance of information, and usability, such as easiness of use and learnability, as well as functionalities commonly met in these systems, affect user interaction and satisfaction. - ItemOpen AccessFanzines: Ο θαυμαστός κόσμος της ερασιτεχνικής εκδοτικής
