| dc.description.abstract | Στόχος της συγκεκριμένης μελέτης είναι να ερευνηθεί περαιτέρω αν οι γευστικές και οι οσφρητικές προτιμήσεις ατόμων με Πλάγια Μυατροφική Σκλήρυνση (ALS) και Νόσο Parkinson (PD) επηρεάζονται από την διαταραχή κατάποσης η οποία αποτελεί βασικό χαρακτηριστικό των συγκεκριμένων νόσων. Μέσω της παρούσας έρευνας διερευνάτε ακόμα, η θετική επίδραση που πιθανόν να έχει η παρουσία του ανθρακούχου χαρακτηριστικού των υγρών σε δυσφαγικό πληθυσμό και συγκεκριμένα σε πληθυσμό με τις προαναφερθείσες νόσους ηλικίας 44-80 ετών. Ο αριθμός των συμμετεχόντων στην έρευνα ήταν 8 με τους 6 εξ αυτών να αποτελούν δείγμα προηγούμενων μελετών που θα αναφερθούν παρακάτω. Τέσσερις συμμετέχοντες εμφανίζουν την νόσο Parkinson και τέσσερις ALS. Οι προαναφερθέντες ακολούθησαν ένα συγκεκριμένο πειραματικό πρωτόκολλο το οποίο περιλάμβανε αξιολόγηση της γνωστικής τους κατάστασης, της ποιότητας ζωής τους μέσω ερωτήσεων που αφορούσαν την γεύση, την όσφρηση, την ξηροστομία και το κάπνισμα και ακόμα αξιολογήθηκε η ικανότητα τους να διακρίνουν και να αναγνωρίζουν συγκεκριμένες γεύσεις και οσμές αλλά και η ικανότητά τους για κατάποση. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, πραγματοποιήθηκαν ερωτηματολόγια συγκεκριμένων συνηθειών, γευστικών και οσφρητικών προτιμήσεων, δείκτη ξηροστομίας, για την καπνιστική συμπεριφορά, γνωστικό αξιολογητικό τεστ καθώς και δοκιμασίες για την κατάποση αλλά και για την γεύση και την όσφρηση μέσω των Sniffin’ Sticks Test, Taste Strips Test και Premium Super Taster Test Kit για την ανίχνευση ύπαρξης ή μη του υπεργονιδίου της γεύσης. Τα αποτελέσματα της πιλοτικής αυτής έρευνας θα συμβάλλουν στην καλύτερη διαχείριση και αντιμετώπιση των δυσφαγικών συμπτωμάτων σε άτομα με ALS και PD. Λόγω του εξαιρετικά μικρού μεγέθους του δείγματος, δεν κατέστη δυνατή η εφαρμογή στατιστικής ανάλυσης στα αποτελέσματα. Ως εκ τούτου, η ερμηνεία των δεδομένων περιορίστηκε αποκλειστικά σε περιγραφικό επίπεδο. Παρόλα αυτά, τόσο για τα άτομα με ALS, όσο και για τα άτομα με PD υπήρξαν διαφορές αλλά και ομοιότητες ως προς τις γευστικές και τις οσφρητικές τους προτιμήσεις, όπως και στις προτιμήσεις τους, κατά την διαδικασία γευστικής προτίμησης υγρών, όπου σημειώθηκαν ίδια αποτελέσματα μεταξύ των δύο ομάδων δείγματος. Τέλος, ως προς την οσφρητική ικανότητα των ασθενών αυτών (ALS-PD), βρέθηκε ουσιαστική χαμηλή βαθμολογία ενώ, ως προς την γευστική ικανότητα σημειώθηκαν φυσιολογικές επιδόσεις. | |
| dc.description.translatedabstract | The aim of this study is to further investigate whether the taste and smell preferences of individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are affected by the swallowing disorder that is the key feature of these diseases. This study also investigates the positive effect that the carbonated characteristic of liquids may have on a dysphagic population, specifically on a population with aforementioned diseases. There were 8 participants in the study, 6 of whom were from previous studies that will be mentioned below. Fours participants has Parkinson’s Disease and four have ALS. The aforementioned participants followed a specific experimental protocol that included an assessment of their cognitive status and quality of life through questions related to taste, smell, dry mouth and smoking. Their ability to distinguish and recognize specific tastes and smells was also assessed, as well as their ability to swallow. More specifically, questionnaires were conducted on specific habits, taste and smell preferences, dry mouth index, smoking behavior, cognitive assessment tests, as well as tests for swallowing, taste and smell using the Sniffin’ Sticks Test, Taste Strips Test and Premium Super Taster Test Kit to detect the presence or absence of the taste supergene. The results of this pilot study will contribute to better management and treatment of dysphagia symptoms in people with AL and PD. Due to the extremely small sample size, it was not possible to apply statistical analysis to the results. Therefore, the interpretation of the data was limited to a descriptive level. Nevertheless, both ALS and PD patients showed differences and similarities in their taste and smell preferences, as well as in their preferences during the liquid taste preference test, where the same results were observed in both sample groups. Finally, in terms of the olfactory ability of these patients (ALS-PD), a significant low score was found, while in terms of taste ability, normal performance was noted. | |
