Abstract

The rapid spread of antimicrobial resistance has intensified the need for new antibacterial materials with high efficacy and low toxicity. Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention due to their high porosity, tunable structure, and ability to incorporate active metal centers, while hybrid systems combining MOFs with nanomaterials offer additional potential for enhanced antibacterial performance. This thesis investigates the antibacterial activity of selected MOFs and their hybrid derivatives against microbial strains. In particular, the copper-based MOF HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC) and related nanocomposite systems were evaluated. Antibacterial activity was assessed through biological assays, including determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀), using photometric methods with resazurin as an indicator of metabolic activity. The results demonstrated that antibacterial effectiveness varies depending on the structural and compositional characteristics of the materials, as well as on the type and integration of additional antibacterial agents in hybrid systems. These findings highlight the importance of structural design and chemical compatibility in optimizing MOF-based antibacterial materials. Overall, this study supports the potential of MOFs and their hybrid systems as promising candidates for the development of advanced antimicrobial materials with applications in biomedicine and public health.
