| dc.description.translatedabstract | This study investigates the prezygotic mechanisms of reproductive isolation between two cryptic sister species of lizards, Podarcis thais and Podarcis peloponnesiacus, which co-occur in a contact zone in the Peloponnese. Despite significant genetic divergence (~1.72 million years), the species exhibit extensive phenotypic overlap, rendering their reproductive isolation controversial. A total of 144 video-recorded no-choice mating trials (homotypic and heterotypic) were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions. Nineteen distinct behaviors were systematically recorded per individual, and multivariate statistical methods (PCA, jackknifed LDA, LMM) were applied. The results revealed: (a) strong sexual dimorphism in behavior (94.03% classification accuracy, p<0.001), with males displaying active approach behaviors and females exhibiting defensive immobility; (b) asymmetric behavioral differentiation between species—males were successfully discriminated (80.60%, p<0.001), whereas females were not (61.19%); and (c) absence of clear behavioral shifts in heterotypic pairings (48.48–61.76% accuracy), indicating that species recognition has not yet fully diverged. The Linear Mixed Model identified sex as the dominant predictor of interest scores (p<0.0001), while the species × mating type interaction was marginally significant (p=0.052), suggesting an incipient tendency for homotypic preference in P. thais. In conclusion, the findings support a model of "incomplete prezygotic isolation," consistent with recent evolutionary divergence, where male signaling has begun to differentiate but behavioral barriers against heterotypic mating remain weak. This work lays the foundation for future integrated studies of chemical, visual, and behavioral divergence, contributing to the understanding of cryptic speciation within the genus Podarcis. | |
