Abstract

This thesis, entitled “Benthic Litter Abundance of the Patras Port Using Remote Sensing Techniques” presents the results of a marine geophysical survey conducted in the Old Port of Patras, Greece, with the aim of identifying seabed targets, many of which may potentially represent marine litter, as well as documenting and analyzing their spatial distribution within the port. The data were collected using SideScan Sonar (SSS). A total of 2.089 targets were manually identified and classified into the following categories: tires, concrete blocks, elongated objects, objects related to anti-submarine nets designed to prevent enemy vessels from entering the port during World War II, rock fragments, fishing gear and a final category designated as “no name” for targets that could not be clearly identified. An attempt was also made to perform automatic target detection using a YOLO-based algorithm, focusing on the tire category. The results were encouraging, with the model achieving an accuracy of 99.17% and a sensitivity of 60%. The overall data processing and analysis were performed using SonarWiz 8, ArcGIS Pro, Label Studio, and Anaconda. The results of this study provide a baseline for future investigations in the port area and contribute to the documentation and spatial assessment of seabed objects. Furthermore, the findings may contribute to environmental awareness and support future initiatives aimed at the removal of marine litter from the seabed of the port.
