This diploma thesis focuses on the mechanical analysis of an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen, with emphasis on the investigation of cavitation phenomena developing in the compression piston ring as a function of the engine crank angle. The increasing need for emission reduction and the transition toward alternative fuels render hydrogen a particularly attractive solution, while simultaneously introducing new challenges regarding the mechanical and fluid dynamic behavior of the engine components. The analysis is carried out in the ANSYS environment through the development of a numerical model that takes into account the mechanical loading of the compression ring during engine operation. Cavitation phenomena are simulated using a multiphase approach, where the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is employed to describe the evolution of the gaseous phase volume fraction within the lubricant medium. Fluid flow is described through the computational fluid dynamics Navier–Stokes equations as implemented in the CFD framework of Ansys.Different hydrogen–gasoline blending ratios are examined in the present study in order to investigate the influence of hydrogen concentration on engine operation and on the cavitation phenomena occurring in the compression ring region. In addition, a cavitation analysis associated with potential cylinder wall wear is conducted through the geometrical simulation of localized wear (“grooving”), aiming to evaluate the resulting changes in lubricant flow behavior and cavitation development.Furthermore, friction phenomena between contacting surfaces are modeled using the Greenwood–Tripp approach. Friction is incorporated into the numerical model through a C-language code integrated into Ansys, enabling a customized representation of the contact conditions. Through the numerical investigation, the occurrence and intensity of cavitation phenomena at different crank angle positions are identified and evaluated, along with their influence on the mechanical response of the compression ring
