In this thesis, an active noise control (ANC) system for headphones is being realized. Modelling of the physical system is achieved by approximating the response of the various electroacoustic mechanisms with second order parallel filters, using B. Bank’s algorithms. Noise attenuation is achieved using a digital controller comprised of adaptive FIR filters and the FxNLMS (FilteredX Normalized Least Mean Squares) coefficient update algorithm. Integrated in the controller lies, an off-line secondary path modelling system that compensates for the unwanted response of the headset speaker. Our system is superior to more simplistic approaches in terms of stability, performance and convergence speed. The impact that the controller parameters (adaptation step, filter length) and the type of applied noise, have on the overall performance of the system are explored. Also an objective of the study is to investigate and human speech intelligibility in the presence of noise, while the system is activated. The process and experiments were all conducted in the MATLAB environment.
