| dc.description.translatedabstract | The convergence of an algebraic system toward the exact solution of its parent Partial Differential Equation (PDE) hinges on the errors we introduce during discretization. This error is driven by two distinct choices: how we approximate the derivatives, and how we structurally map the physical domain. The spacing between grid nodes strictly dictates how the algebraic system's solution evolves with each iteration. The easiest, most brute-force way to increase accuracy is to uniformly increase the density of the entire grid. However, every new node adds another equation to the algebraic matrix. This linearly, or even exponentially, inflates the computational cost and solving time. To avoid this processing bottleneck, an engineer must be strategic. Instead of wasting computational resources on areas where the physics are stable, we can locally refine—or "stretch"—the grid in regions where the solution exhibits sharp gradients or abrupt physical changes. This captures high-resolution detail exactly where it is needed, without paying the penalty of a massive algebraic system. This report evaluates the trade-off between accuracy and computational cost across various grid refinement strategies, using a uniform mesh as a baseline. We specifically examine the Roberts (one-sided) and Vinokur (two-sided) stretching functions across three Peclet numbers (Pe = 1, 10, 100) and three distinct Dirichlet boundary condition scenarios: (i) a single heated wall, (ii) two adjacent heated walls, and (iii) two opposing heated walls. To ensure numerical consistency, all temperature fields were computed using a convergence tolerance of 10-6. The resulting steady-state solutions were then quantitatively assessed using the L2 to identify the optimal grid configuration for each combination of Peclet number and boundary conditions (Pei, BCi). Our findings demonstrate that strategic grid stretching does more than just enhance precision; it is essential for maintaining stability at higher Peclet numbers. Furthermore, the results indicate that no single stretching function is universally superior; the performance of the Roberts function versus the Vinokur function is strictly dependent on the specific topology of the boundary conditions. | |
