Abstract
The present thesis focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of two different design approaches aimed at promoting energy-saving behavior in the operation of household appliances within a smart home application. Our goal was to examine whether these two different approaches, called “digital nudging techniques”, can influence users' decisions to use the eco-friendly program offered by the home appliances in order to reduce electricity consumption. For this purpose, we developed an interface containing three smart home appliances, with an emphasis on promoting the eco program to users by using two different digital nudges along with a control group. After completing the interface design, we conducted a pilot laboratory study using Eye Tracking technology to assess the quality of the nudge designs and their visibility to users. After making the necessary design changes, we proceeded to the web development of the app. Once the implementation was completed, we conducted a 3x3 factorial within-subject online experiment. To evaluate the results, a random sample of 306 users who interacted with the interface was used. Through the analysis of the results, it was observed that the design influenced users' choices, and more specifically, certain digital nudging techniques were evident in achieving the desired outcome of selecting the eco program, while others did not demonstrate the same effectiveness.
