The growing environmental impact of conventional plastic packaging has shifted research interest towards the development of environmentally friendly materials that combine sustainability with functionality. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a polymer with good biocompatibility and biodegradability and has been extensively investigated for food packaging applications. However, its pronounced hydrophilicity limits its resistance in aqueous environments as well as its mechanical strength and barrier performance, making the improvement of its properties through suitable modifications essential. In this context, the present thesis focuses on the study of PVA-based nanocomposite membranes reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and lignocellulose (LC), two environmentally friendly bio-based materials. The main objective was to investigate the effect of the type and loading percentage of the nanofillers on the structure and properties of the membranes. A broad range of experimental techniques was employed for their comprehensive evaluation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) revealed the morphology and dispersion of the fillers within the PVA matrix, while ATR-FTIR spectroscopy confirmed molecular interactions with the fillers and indicated possible variations in crystallinity. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) served as the primary technique for the quantitative determination of crystallinity and the assessment of structural changes in the polymer matrix, with Differential Scanning Calo-rimetry (DSC) providing complementary insights into crystallinity and chain mobility through the analy-sis of transition temperatures (Tm, Tg) and the melting enthalpy (ΔHm). The functional behavior of the membranes was further assessed through swelling measurements in aqueous and hydroalcoholic me-dia and by determining the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and gas permeability (CO₂, O₂, N₂), which highlighted their barrier properties. Finally, tensile tests (YM, TS, EAB) provided a comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical performance of the nanocomposite membranes. The experimental results showed that the incorporation of CNC and LC into the PVA matrix induced significant changes in the structural, thermal, barrier, and mechanical properties of the membranes. At low filler loadings (1%), both nanomaterials contributed to an increase in crystallinity and stabilization of the structure through strong hydrogen bonding with the PVA matrix, while the membranes exhibited good homogeneity. CNC in particular promoted uniform dispersion, enhancing stress transfer and providing a balanced combination of strength and flexibility. In contrast, LC, although increasing the Young’s modulus of the material, led to a reduction in elongation at break, especially at higher concentrations. Regarding barrier performance, the incorporation of the nanofillers generally increased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), thus reducing the moisture barrier capacity. Nevertheless, at low concentrations (1%), a decrease in gas permeability was recorded, particularly for CO₂, while O₂ and N₂ values remained below the detection limit, indicating an improvement in gas barrier performance. Overall, the results demonstrate that the incorporation of CNC and LC into PVA enables controlled tailoring of membrane properties, according to the requirements of each specific application. The selection of the appropriate type and loading level of the nanofiller is crucial for achieving a balance between microstructure, thermal stability, barrier properties against water vapor and gases, and the overall set of mechanical characteristics. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the structure-property relationship in PVA/CNC and PVA/LC nanocomposites and highlights these materials as promising candidates for the development of sustainable and efficient food packaging solutions.
