Very often, viruses of human origin are detected in wastewater, which are potentially pathogenic and dangerous for Public Health. Two of the most important viruses are adenovirus and hepatitis A virus. Adenoviruses are viral markers of infection and are responsible for serious gastrointestinal and respiratory health problems. At the same time, the hepatitis A virus is the main cause of acute hepatitis in humans and ranks among the most important foodborne pathogens. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the presence of adenovirus and hepatitis A virus in municipal wastewater samples from the biological purification of Patras. Every week, three 24-hour samples were taken by the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Patras (DEYAP), on the first three days of each week. The sampling was carried out from the entrance of the biological treatment for a period of 6 months, according to the guidelines of the National Public Health Organization (EODY). The collection was followed by nucleic acid extraction and then quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) to detect and quantify viruses (genome copies/liter). The results of the present study showed an impressive positivity rate for adenovirus, reaching 94.2%, while hepatitis A was completely negative. A statistical correlation between the gene copies and nine chemical parameters of the wastewater followed. Of the correlations, one proved to be statistically significant. In conclusion, the prevalence of the positive result for adenovirus during the entire semester and its constant presence reflects the literature. This confirms that the adenovirus remains resistant and maintains a stable response to the environment for extended periods of time after infection, showing no seasonal pattern. The absence of hepatitis A in the sewage samples is consistent with the clinical data of the period.
