The present doctoral dissertation explores into the contribution of modeling through simple machines in the first grade of Vocational High School (EPAL). The importance of the study arises from the fact that fundamental concepts of mechanics often remain abstract when approached exclusively at a theoretical level. Modeling while engaging in digital technologies can transform these concepts into functional representations, enabling students to experiment, predict, and improve real systems. At the same time, contemporary educational theories highlight the need for interdisciplinary STEM approaches that combine mathematics, science, engineering, and technological design within authentic learning environments. Research in teaching simple machines remains limited within the field of science education and mainly focuses on concepts such as force and mechanical advantage. Consequently, a gap is inevitably created in studies addressing concepts such as work and energy, as well as in studies combining design, modeling, and simulation of real systems based on simple machines. The aim of this dissertation was to discover how students approached concepts of mechanics through experiential learning activities with simple machines and how they used software tools such as Tinkercad and microcontrollers such as Micro:bit to design, model, program, simulate, and implement a remotely controlled hoisting system. The study was based on theoretical approaches of mechatronics teaching methodology which view simple machines and microcontrollers as machine elements, and of STEM education, which integrates the respective disciplinary fields through the application of a real output. In addition, the study drew upon research that considers modeling to be a cognitive process, technology a cognitive tool, and computational thinking a practice of representation and modeling. The research was conducted using the Design-Based Research methodology and was organized according to the Understanding by Design framework, which aligns learning content and practices with acceptable evidence of learning, along with the learning activities and instructional approach. Students used simple machines through hands-on learning activities to comprehend concepts of mechanics, while Tinkercad software and the microcntroller Micro:bit were utilized through the Engineering Design Process for the implementation of a hoisting machine unit. The findings of the study showed that students were able to approach mechanics concepts effectively through simple machines. At the same time, they used digital and physical models to design and control the operation of the system, engaging in science and engineering practices such as model development, solution design, system investigation, and computational thinking.
