Στην εργασία χρησιμοποιήθηκε μια τροποποίηση/επέκταση του μοντέλου η οποία υλοποιήθηκε στα πλαίσια του ερευνητικού έργου ΦΚ 81620 (SimiLi: Προσομοίωση Ισοτροπικών Ρευστών) του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών υπό τον τίτλο “Brownian Dynamics simulations of the rheological behavior of wormlike micelle”.
Micelles are structures formed through the self-assembly of surfactant molecules when they are present at an appropriate concentration in a solution (usually aqueous), referred to as a micellar solution. As the concentration of surfactants increases, and typically in the presence of an electrolyte, micelles can associate to form structures that vary in characteristics and morphology depending on the corresponding concentrations and conditions. In general, due to the ability of surfactants to modify the interfacial tension between two phases (liquid–liquid, liquid–solid, liquid–gas), they are used in numerous industrial processes and in every-day consumer products such as cleaners, detergents, cosmetics, shampoos, pharmaceutical formu-lations, etc., without micelle formation always being necessary. Among other properties, the rheological properties of micellar solutions are particularly im-portant, as they affect both the production process and the final properties of products. For example, in personal care products such as shampoos, they influence formulation stability and the sensory experience during use (texture, ease of application, etc.). In this context, the present work studies the rheological properties of aqueous solutions of worm-like micelles, whose shape, as the name suggests, and consequently their behavior, resembles that of polymer chains. The methodology used is based on the slip-spring model for multi-micelle systems, which is de-scribed in detail in the literature. In this work, a modification/extension of the model was employed, implemented within the research project FK 81620 (SimiLi: Simulation of Isotropic Fluids) at the Uni-versity of Patras, entitled “Brownian Dynamics simulations of the rheological behavior of wormlike micelle.” Beyond the scientific interest in better understanding the factors that affect the rheological properties of micellar solutions, the aim of the project was to develop tools for optimizing the design of personal care products. The study conducted focuses on the effect of micelle size distribution and the association–disso-ciation rate on the shear relaxation modulus function, viscosity, and relaxation time. Additionally, the operation of the simulator and its response to variations in specific parameters were examined. From the study, it is concluded that the slip-spring model successfully describes the rheological behavior of micellar solutions when the association–dissociation mechanism dominates the relaxa-tion process. The use of a fixed number of entanglements yields results comparable to the fluctuating scheme, with improved computational efficiency. Increasing the minimum number of beads per mi-celle extends the plateau region and increases the relaxation time, while the absence of breakage leads to an even greater slowdown of the dynamics.
