| dc.description.translatedabstract | In Chapter (1) of the paper an introductory reference is made to the international literature, terminology and introductory concepts of interest rates and bonds, along with their applications. The concept of zero-coupon bond yield is introduced, and the procedure for finding the yield formula (1.10) is presented, directly derived from the bond price formula (1.10). In Chapter (2) of the paper, an introduction is made to four zero-coupon bond yield curve fitting models (Nelson-Siegel, 1987), (Svensson, 1994), (Diebold-Li, 2006) and (De Rezende-ferreira, 2013). We applied these models on Greek data, for which the statistical measures of the square root of the mean square error, the mean absolute error and the coefficient of determination were used to compare the performance of the models, in terms of their fit to the curve of yields of Greek bonds. It turns out that the DeRezende-Ferreira five-parameter model fits best to the Greek data, among the analyzed models. On the basis of the discussion developed in the literature regarding the issues arising from the use of these parametric models for adjusting the yield curve of zero-coupon bonds and with the aim of avoiding incorrect estimates of the yields of zero-coupon bonds of the Greek market, in specific time periods moments and maturities, the non-linear optimization method of Differential Evolution, which was developed by (Storn-Price, 1997), was used to estimate the four parameters of the Nelson-Siegel-Svensson model, with very encouraging results regarding the adaptation of the model to the Greek data. In Chapter (3) of the paper, a study is made of possible connections of the co-movements of zero-coupon bond yields in the international markets, while the Greek bond market is also introduced to the already existing data set of the rest of the international markets (Wright, 2011). As it appears, through the primary analysis, where a double analysis of principal components is carried out, there are common factors which interpret to a large extent the movements of international yields. Three Global Factors are extracted which, after their identification according to the Diebold-Li model, are characterized as Global Level, Global Slope and Global Curvature and three Local Factors that interpret a large percentage of the common paths of the returns of bonds of the 11 international markets and then their correlation with global macro-economic figures is presented, confirming the relationship of the first Global Factor with the global OECD inflation, the second Global Factor with the global industrial growth rate production and the third Global factor with the risk indicators the financial crisis detection index and the financial stress index of the bank of St. Louis. | |
