SWCNTs.
The use of nanoparticles as a reinforcing phase in polymer matrices leads to the development of multiscale reinforced composite materials. Nanoscale reinforcement improves the fracture mechanical behavior of composites by introducing additional energy absorption mechanisms during fracture, resulting in enhanced damage tolerance. This study investigates the fracture mechanical properties of a polymer material reinforced with carbon-based nanoparticles, specifically Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs). The aim of the research is to evaluate the effect of SWCNTs on the mechanical behavior and fracture resistance of the polymer. Three independent sets of experiments were conducted within the framework of this study. In the first two, the dispersion of SWCNTs into the polymer matrix was achieved using a dissolver, while in the third, the dispersion was carried out using the calendering method. In all cases, SWCNT contents of 0.3 wt.% and 0.5 wt.% were examined. To determine the fracture resistance, the Single-Edge Notch Bending (SENB) method was employed according to the ASTM D5045 standard, aiming to calculate the critical stress intensity factor (KIC). The results demonstrated the positive effect of SWCNTs on improving fracture resistance, particularly at lower contents (0.3 wt.%) for both dispersion techniques. However, at higher contents (0.5 wt.%), the dissolver method showed limitations, likely due to the formation of nanotube agglomerates, which act as stress concentration points within the material. In contrast, the calendering method allowed for effective dispersion of the SWCNTs even at 0.5 wt.%, leading to a significant increase in fracture resistance, as reflected in the measured KIC values. The study confirms that the successful reinforcement of polymers with SWCNTs depends not only on the nanotube content but also on the dispersion method and the intrinsic properties of the nanoparticles, such as specific surface area and aspect ratio.
