The aerospace industry constitutes one of the steadily growing sectors, due to the market demand for rapid transportation of passengers and goods over long distances. Nevertheless, flight, fuel, and maintenance costs are considerably high. At the same time, humanity’s shift towards environmentally friendly transportation limits the available choices regarding the construction materials, geometry, engine performance, and aerodynamic behavior of aircraft. For these reasons, the design teams of aerospace companies are oriented towards aircraft configurations with higher wing aspect ratios, refined external surfaces, and advanced materials. These are factors that allow the reduction of structural mass, fuel consumption, and the increase of range. All the choices regarding aircraft characteristics are evaluated during the design process. Through this process, various candidate configurations are investigated, which constitute the preliminary aircraft models. In the early stages, the solutions are evaluated using low-fidelity modeling to obtain results rapidly. These tools have low accuracy. Therefore, in the final stages, the validation of the final design is performed using high-fidelity frameworks, which require longer computational times. This difficulty is attributed to the complexity of the phenomena, such as the aeroelastic coupling of the fluid with the flexible structure and the non-linear behavior of composite materials of flexible wings. This thesis presents a high-fidelity aeroelastic analysis of composite aircraft wings. The analysis is performed using the CRM (Common Research Model) wing geometry, which is subjected to steady aerodynamic loads. The fluid–structure interaction is one-way coupled. The computational framework begins with the analysis, through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), of the flow field around the wing. For the solution, the Fluent software of Ansys is employed, and the high-fidelity RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) fluid-mechanical equations are solved in conjunction with the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model. The validation of the framework is performed using known computational data from the simulation of the steady Horizontal Flight condition. At the same time, numerical convergence is verified, and the physical results of the flow are presented. The confirmation of the physical representation of this condition allows further analysis of the Climb Maneuver condition. Similarly, the behavior and numerical convergence of the simulation under the aforementioned condition are presented. Subsequently, the aerodynamic load is introduced, with the assistance of Ansys, into the finite element model of the CRM. Having designed the structural components that constitute the mechanical computational domain and selecting the reference composite material, an initial estimation of its ply distribution within these components is performed. Since the structural characteristics are not known a priori, the coupling of the two fields is introduced within a structural optimization framework. The identification of the qualitatively optimal solution is achieved through the coupling of the structural solver MSC Nastran and the MIDACO algorithm, which manages the design variables and evaluates the candidate solutions. The computations demonstrated that the CRM wing exhibits a significant reduction in structural mass, without violating the optimization constraints. Furthermore, the analysis provided results regarding the mechanical behavior of the wing.
