Nanoparticles have attracted scientific and technological interest due to their unique physicochemical properties. Their surface functionalization with soft flexible polymer chains is used extensively to modify in a controllable way their properties including the way they self-organize into hierarchical macrostructures. Atomistic computer simulations, in conjunction with experiments, have shed new light on the structure-properties relationship of these structures and of the nano-world. In this MSc Thesis we review the methods used for the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles, especially those of Gold (Au), and their physical properties. We also review the methods for surface modification of the nanoparticles with flexible polymer chains towards the so called hard-core—soft-shell nanoparticles. In the last part we present molecular dynamics simulations, in the atomistic level, of gold nanoparticles with diameters of a few nanometers. We analyze their structure and compare the computational results with available experimental data. The resultant nanoparticle structures are then functionalized to produce core-shell models. The properties of these hybrid nanostructures are then analyzed using as parameters the length of the grafted chains as well as their grafting density.el
