Abstract
Τwo-dimensional (2D) layered nanostructures are of interest to a wide range of scientific and technological fields due to their unique nonlinear optical properties, making them potential candidates for various applications in electronics, photonics, and optoelectronics. This work investigates the effects of decorating non-van der Walls 2D hematene nanoplatelets with gold nanoparticles on the ultrafast third-order NLO response. Z-scan and Optical Kerr Effect (OKE) techniques were employed under various excitation conditions, using the fundamental and second-harmonic generation outputs of a femtosecond Ti-sapphire laser and an Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA) for different excitation wavelengths. The study reveals that hematene decorated with gold nanoparticles exhibits exceptionally enhanced NLO absorptive and refractive response compared to pristine hematene, attributed to plasmonic effects. These findings provide important insights for optimizing these materials in optoelectronic and photonic applications.
In particular, this thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, a brief overview of the fundamental principles of nonlinear optics and some of the most significant nonlinear optical processes along with the underlying mechanisms, are presented. The second part includes a short description of the experimental techniques, the methodology for the analysis of the experimental data and the laser system which was utilized for the experiments. The last chapter aims to present the samples under study, their characterizations and the experimental results obtained by means of both techniques.
