This study focuses on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute to the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOA), two air pollutants that are especially harmful to hu-man health. Due to their high vapor pressure at normal ambient temperatures, VOCs are continu-ously present in the troposphere. The research is based on high-frequency air quality measure-ments carried out at the National Observatory of Athens (Thissio) during the months of July and October 2023. For the determination of the concentrations of various VOCs, the Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) method was used, which offers high sensitivity and al-lows for real-time measurements. A total of 18 VOCs were analyzed including aromatic, biogenic, oxygenated compounds as well as acetonitrile. The aim of this study was to investigate the tem-poral variations and diurnal profiles of the VOCs and, in a second step, to identify the sources us-ing Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The results showed that methanol was the most abundant VOC for July while acrolein dominat-ed in October. Aromatic compounds did not show large differences in their concentrations be-tween the two months, with the highest values observed in autumn. Isoprene and monoterpenes, compounds of known biogenic origin, showed expected profiles in July, while in October a varia-bility of profiles influenced by human factors was observed. PMF analysis showed that traffic was the main source of aromatic compounds for both months. In July, in addition to traffic, the vegetation factor was detected with dominant emissions of iso-prene, MVK & MACR, MEK, MBO, acetaldehyde and acetone. Monoterpenes occurred in a large proportion in a different agent from the vegetation agent, isolating them to a separate source of biogenic origin. The latter producer was attributed to emissions of oxygenated compounds (meth-anol, formic acid/ethanol, acrolein, acetone and acetic acid) transported to the atmosphere. Addi-tionally, in October, a source was identified as the emission of acrolein, a mixture of anthropogenic and biogenic compounds and finally oxygenated compounds associated with biogenic compounds.
