Abstract

The thesis aims to reinterpret the ancient mine of Cyprianos in Lavrion as a site of cultural and environmental regeneration, transforming it from a symbol of industrial decline into a dynamic landscape of memory and identity. Through architectural intervention, the project reinterprets Lavrion as a palimpsest of geological, social, and industrial history. A thematic, multisensory path leads visitors through a redesigned mining tunnel and up a hillside path inspired by the historic silver vein. Along this symbolic route, cultural, research, and educational structures unfold, narrating the transformation of raw material into knowledge and culture. The visitor symbolically becomes the miner, tracing the evolution of humanity’s relationship with the mineral world. Ultimately, the proposal merges history, nature, and architecture to create a reflective cultural landmark that supports Lavrion’s cultural, economic, and environmental revitalization.
