This diploma thesis focuses on the computational investigation of the flow and mixing characteristics downstream of a conical bluff body, suitable for the stratified combustion of ammonia–air mixtures. The flow is stabilized within a recirculation zone formed downstream of the bluff body, aiming at the development of an efficient and environmentally friendly combustion system. The modeling of the specific configuration also serves as a preparatory stage for the future experimental design of ammonia–air combustion systems, through the initial understanding of the isothermal flow field and mixing mechanisms. The study begins with an analysis of the fundamental concepts of combustion and fuels, with particular emphasis on ammonia, highlighting both its advantages and the challenges associated with its use as an alternative carbon-free fuel. This is followed by an investigation of flame characteristics, the parameters affecting flame propagation speed, and the critical phenomena of blow-off and flashback. Furthermore, flow fields are examined, with special focus on turbulent flow, which plays a decisive role in the combustion process and the operation of the selected configuration. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of bluff bodies for flame anchoring and control. For the purposes of this study, the commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent was employed. Initially, the geometry of the configuration was designed, and, through the selection of an appropriate control volume and boundary conditions, different finite-volume meshes were generated. A grid independence study was subsequently conducted to ensure numerical accuracy and reliability of the results. Simulations of the isothermal flow field were then performed for three different fuel flow rates. The computations were carried out under steady-state conditions using the Realizable k–ε turbulence model, selected due to its improved prediction of turbulent stresses and its enhanced reliability in flows characterized by strong curvature, shear layers, and recirculation, features inherent to the present bluff body configuration. The analysis focused on the radial distributions of axial and radial velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and equivalence ratio (Φ) downstream of the bluff body. Variations in both the structure and intensity of the recirculation zone were observed among the examined cases and are discussed in detail in the final chapter of the thesis. The comparative assessment of the three cases highlights the decisive role of fuel flow rate in shaping the flow field and provides critical insights into the optimal operating range of ammonia–air combustion systems.
