Η αξιοπιστία επαναληψιμότητας εκτιμήθηκε μέσω του ενδοταξικού συντελεστή συσχέτισης (ICC[A,1]), ενώ υπολογίστηκαν το Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) και το Minimal Detectable Change (MDC95). | |
| dc.description.translatedabstract | Return to sport (RTS) following lower-extremity injury is a complex and multifactorial process that extends beyond the restoration of mechanical function and physical capacity, encompassing the reintegration of neurocognitive and sensorimotor processes required for safe athletic performance. Although traditional functional performance tests are widely used to assess RTS readiness, they are typically performed under predictable and controlled conditions, limiting their ecological validity and their ability to detect residual cognitive–motor deficits. Consequently, the integration of cognitive load through dual-task paradigms has emerged as a contemporary approach for enhancing the functional relevance of RTS assessment. The purpose of the present study was to develop and evaluate the reliability of neurocognitive lower-extremity functional tests by integrating cognitive demands into two established hop performance tests: the Side Hop Test and the Figure-of-8 Hop Test. In addition, the study aimed to investigate the effect of cognitive load on motor performance during test execution. Healthy recreational athletes aged 18–35 years participated in the study. Participants performed both the traditional (single-task) and neurocognitive (dual-task) versions of the functional tests during two separate testing sessions conducted 7–10 days apart. Test–retest reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), while motor and cognitive performance variables, including dual-task cost (DTC), were recorded and analyzed. The findings demonstrated good-to-excellent reliability for both the traditional and neurocognitive versions of the tests, supporting the consistency and reproducibility of the proposed assessment protocols. Furthermore, the addition of cognitive load resulted in measurable impairments in motor performance, reflected by increased completion time and/or a higher number of execution errors, highlighting the influence of cognitive–motor demands on lower-extremity functional performance. In conclusion, the neurocognitive versions of the Side Hop Test and Figure-of-8 Hop Test appear to constitute reliable and functionally relevant tools for assessing readiness to return to sport. The incorporation of cognitive demands may enhance the ecological validity of functional performance testing and facilitate the identification of residual cognitive–motor deficits that may not be detected through conventional assessments. These findings further support the contemporary perspective that RTS decision-making should integrate not only mechanical and neuromuscular criteria, but also neurocognitive components of athletic readiness. | |
