Abstract

The subject of the specific thesis is an 8-bit Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) where is designed based on a ring oscillator. The functionality of TDC is to convert an information from time domain to a digital form for further process. The proposed TDC features 8-bit resolution using limited delay elements, unlike the conventional TDC, where the area occupation, consumption, number of connections and bits of thermometer-to-binary decoder is decreased. At first a reference is made at Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and TDC and measurements, where also is presented the conventional TDC. Further the architecture and functionality of the proposed design is represented, as also the building blocks. Also, the layout of the delay line and D flip flop are designed where the results of the pre-layout and post-layout simulation are extracted and compare. The design of the TDC is implemented in 65nm TSMC technology using Cadence Virtuoso with a supply voltage of 1.2V and sampling frequency of 50 MHz. Also is presented the difference of the consumption between the pre layout and post layout simulation.
