The subject of this diploma thesis is the sustainability assessment of pressure vessels, which constitute critical storage subsystems in modern aerospace and industrial applications. Traditionally, their manufacturing focused mainly on structural integrity; however, contemporary requirements mandate the integration of sustainability criteria from the very early stages of design. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the sustainability of alternative pressure vessel design scenarios for aircraft applications and identify the optimal design solution. These scenarios are derived from the combination of various geometries (cylinder, sphere, cone) and materials, including metallic alloys (Aluminum 2024, Titanium Ti6Al4V) and composite materials (Carbon/Epoxy). To achieve the aforementioned objective, a combination of modern computational and analytical methods was utilized. Initially, a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted using the Ansys software to verify structural strength under internal pressure conditions and to calculate the minimum required weight of the structure. Subsequently, the environmental and economic assessment was carried out via the SimaPro software, applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) for all stages of production. Finally, the resulting data (safety factor, weight, cost, environmental footprint) served as input for the TOPSIS Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method. Through an algorithmic approach, the TOPSIS method ranked the 138 alternatives, extracting conclusions regarding the optimal combination of material and geometry, and providing a comprehensive framework for sustainable design. The results from the acceptable scenarios showed that, overall across all geometries, Aluminum Alloy 2024 is the most advantageous ecological and economical choice.
