Item Embargo Language and theory of mind of Greek elementary school children with or without language difficulties(2026-05-13) Μπαγιόκα, Δάφνη Βάια; Bagioka, Dafni VaiaThe aim of this thesis was to investigate how school-aged children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) compare with their neurotypical (NT) peers in three domains at the interface of language and cognition: Narrative retelling, Theory of Mind-False Beliefs (ToM-FBs), and Evidentiality, and whether shared shortcomings can be identified and be attributed to a specific source. While difficulties in vocabulary, morphosyntax, and memory are well established in DLD, far less is known about how these deficits impact higher-level skills that are essential for social interaction and academic success. Narratives, ToM-FBs, and Evidentiality all rely on the integration of linguistic and cognitive resources, providing the opportunity to explore broader vulnerabilities in DLD. Seventy-five participants participated in the study: 25 children with DLD, 25 age-matched NT children (mean age ≈ 10 years, age range: 9–11 years, 3rd-6th grades), and 25 adults. Baseline measurements included nonverbal IQ (Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices), working memory (Backward Digit Recall), receptive vocabulary (LEXIS), and a Sentence Repetition task (SRT), developed by the “Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS)” project. Narrative retelling skills were examined with the Cat story from the “Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN)”, yielding measurements of macrostructure (Story Structure, Complete Episodes, Internal State Terms) and microstructure (Mean Length of Utterance (MLU), Subordinate Clauses (SCs) and Complement Clauses (CCs) from both retelling and SRT, Type-Token Ratio, and Mental State Verbs). 1st and 2nd order ToM-FBs were assessed with a modified version of the “German-Greek toolkit for Theory of Mind and Language in Autism task (MiLA)” (Marinis et al., 2023), in both verbal (V) and non-verbal (NV) modalities. Evidentiality was assessed by a modified version of the task in Angelopoulos et al. (2023), which employed indicative and relative complement clauses in a picture-selection paradigm. Statistical analyses included descriptive comparisons, Multivariate Analyses of Variance (MANOVA), correlations, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analyses, and Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs). Narrative results showed that children with DLD were significantly impaired compared to NT peers at both macro- and micro-structure, with pronounced deficits in syntactic complexity (MLU, SCs). Story Structure emerged as a robust narrative measurement that differentiated the two groups; however, ROC analyses and generalized linear mixed model analyses indicated that no single narrative index could serve as a diagnostic marker. In contrast, baseline tasks (SRT and LEXIS) demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy, confirming their value in clinical assessment. ToM-FB results confirmed that children with DLD performed significantly less well than both their NT peers and the adults on the FB conditions. Performance differences cannot be attributed to modality, as both V and NV conditions were similarly challenging for children with DLD. CCs from the narrative retelling task predicted ToM-FB performance, suggesting that syntactic skills, in particular, complementation, provide the linguistic scaffolding required for belief reasoning. Evidentiality results contribute the first experimental evidence for Greek-speaking children with DLD. The NT children of the study performed similarly to adults. Children with DLD showed significantly lower accuracy, having particular difficulties in mapping indirect source of evidence to indicative CCs. Importantly, ToM-FBs did not predict performance on Evidentiality, contrary to claims in the literature; instead, CCs emerged as the key predictor of Evidentiality, pointing to a linguistic foundation shared by belief reasoning and source of evidence. This thesis makes a number of novel contributions: it provides new empirical evidence on Narrative retelling, ToM-FB, and Evidentiality skills of Greek-speaking children with DLD. A consistent pattern emerged across all three domains: difficulties in DLD are closely tied to weaknesses in syntactic complexity, especially in the use of SCs and CCs. Narrative measurements revealed clinical vulnerabilities, but are not necessarily diagnostic markers. Together, these findings refined our understanding of DLD as an impairment that disrupts not just the morphosyntax component, but the broader domains where morphosyntax interacts with discourse, and reasoning about beliefs and source of evidence.
