Abstract

This thesis focuses on the study, design, and simulation of an OPLL based coherent homodyne receiver. OPLL combines a unique combination of low power consumption, high precision, high frequency and bandwidth with low latency. The primary objective is to analyze the OPLL’s operational principles and basic concepts before emphasizing in three basic structures of OPLL, the Balanced loop, Costas loop, and Decision-driven loop. Following the theoretical analysis, three different systems were designed and simulated using the commercial photonics software VPIphotonics Design Suite. These systems include a BPSK transmission system with Costas OPLL based receiver, a QPSK, and a 4QAM transmission system with Decision-driven OPLL. The simulations reveal system behavior under diverse conditions and verify each system’s dependency on certain parameters. An additional aim of the simulations is to determine the optimal operating ranges of the parameters to ensure efficient performance. By bridging the theoretical analysis and experimental implementation, the thesis highlights the need for wider recognition of OPLL technology for future innovations.
