The aim of this thesis is to find ways to minimize the consumption of a TFT-LCD LED display by reducing its brightness while maintaining the quality of the visual performance. A large portion of the energy (between 20-55 %) consumed on such a display is due to the brightness level that the illuminating light source is irradiating (backlight level). The reduction of the backlight level and the processing of the projected image are proposed in an attempt to drastically reduce the consumption of the display and in order to achieve the best possible ratio between power gain and image quality. In this direction, a research is carried out on earlier papers and based on these, the Rolloff algorithm is developed and implemented in MATLAB, which will be used in comparison with the algorithms developed in this thesis. The necessary measurements are then made to develop the image processing algorithms and measurements with the camera are taken first. By changing the brightness of the display as well as the shades in the 3 basic colors (red, green, blue) we capture the visual effect of the display in photos. The sum of the photos are compared to the original photo using photo comparison software (SSIM), producing the result tables that form the basis of this thesis. Based on these table data three image processing algorithms (Best, Margin, Set) were developed and implemented in MATLAB. The second type of measurements were the ones taken with the Lightmeter. Similarly to camera measurements, the brightness of the display and the shade of the 3 basic colors change in the same way, except that in this case the indication on the Lightmeter is recorded for the different cases. Three result tables were produced from these measurements, one for each basic color. These tables were utilized in the development of another algorithm in MATLAB. The algorithm is called Lighmeter128 or Lightmeter184 depending on the image point its application starts. Finally, the algorithms resulting from the two types of measurements are combined and three more algorithms are developed. These combined algorithms are called LightBest, LightMargin, LightSet and were implemented in MATLAB. Once the various algorithms mentioned were developed, they were implemented individually in five different images. Their results are imprinted with the camera and then the process of comparing the photos with the original image using the same software (SSIM) mentioned in the first type of measurements follows. This process results in the creation of a pivot table containing all the results of the algorithms. For each backlight level and based on this table the optimal algorithm is proposed and the consumption gains are listed accordingly. It can be observed that a backlight reduction to 70% results in a 30% reduction in screen consumption while the average image distortion does not exceed 10%. Finally, a reference is made about possible ideas on how this thesis can be continued in future work. In particular, the hardware-level implementation of the algorithms for real-time applications is suggested along with their implementation for video and the extension of this thesis on OLED and AMOLED displays.el
