| dc.description.translatedabstract | The transition of modern Electric Power Systems (EPS) towards full decarbonization and the massive penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have drastically increased stochasticity and reduced the physical inertia of the grid. Under the European Target Model framework, RES producers now fully bear Balancing Responsibility, a fact that exposes them to significant financial risks, such as balancing costs and Non-Compliance Charges. The present thesis aims to address this critical issue by analyzing the transition of a Photovoltaic (PV) portfolio from a passive producer to an active flexibility provider. This approach is of paramount importance to both the scientific community and to society, as it transforms unpredictable stochastic generation into tradable flexibility, assisting the Transmission System Operator (TSO) in stabilizing the grid, reducing reliance on polluting conventional units, and enhancing the economic viability of RES in the modern competitive landscape. To tackle this problem, a comprehensive decision-making model was developed for Renewable Energy Aggregators. Initially, a hybrid price forecasting algorithm (Smart Ensemble) was created, which feeds data into a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) mathematical model. Subsequently, an optimizer was developed to formulate a strategy for simultaneous participation (co-optimization) in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and the Balancing Market (BM) through the manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) Up/Down products. The optimizer incorporates realistic constraints, such as the operational rules of the MARI platform, the stepped volume activation of bids in the BM, and a 17% derating of the available capacity, acting as a physical risk hedging mechanism. The results categorically confirmed the superiority of the proposed methodology; the proposed forecasting model achieved a significant error reduction, improving forecast accuracy by 4.9% in the DAM, 1.9% in mFRR Up, and 1.4% in mFRR Down during the critical PV generation hours, compared to the forecasting errors of a static simple moving average model. Economically, it was demonstrated that the co-optimization strategy more than doubles the profits compared to a single-market participation in the DAM (61,825.93 €/MW versus 29,099.88 €/MW). The portfolio effectively capitalized on the opportunity cost of price spikes in the mFRR Up, while concurrently protecting itself during periods of oversupply in the DAM via the mFRR Down, proving that the intelligent management of available flexibility outweighs any price inherent forecasting errors. In the future, this system can be further evolved through the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), an advancement that will enable participation in additional BM products. Moreover, the framework can be expanded to include participation in the Intraday Markets (IDM) and the utilization of near-real-time data to minimize forecasting errors. The thesis is structured into seven chapters: Chapter 1 introduces the challenges of modern Power Systems and the role of RES. Chapter 2 analyzes the architecture of the Target Model and the energy markets. Chapter 3 delves into the regulatory and technical framework of the mFRR and the MARI platform. Chapter 4 focuses on the development and evaluation of the hybrid price forecasting algorithm. Chapter 5 formulates the mathematical model and the participation strategies. Chapter 6 presents the extensive statistical, economic, and graphical evaluation of the results. Finally, Chapter 7 summarizes the final conclusions and the future prospects of the study. | |
