Abstract

The present study focuses on the mapping and habitat suitability assessment of Coralligenous formations located in the Cyclades Plateau by integrating marine geophysical techniques and visual census surveys. Coralligenous formations, complex biogenic structures primarily formed by encrusting coralline algae, serve as biodiversity hotspots in the Mediterranean Sea. Their ecological significance and increasing anthropogenic threats underscore the need for comprehensive mapping and conservation strategies. This research employs high-resolution geophysical data from side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler, complemented by ground-truthing techniques such as remotely operated vehicle (ROV) imaging. The findings outline the spatial distribution of Coralligenous reefs and identify key environmental factors influencing their presence and growth. The results have a pivotal role to a better comprehension of the extent and condition of these formations, supporting marine spatial planning and conservation efforts in the Aegean Sea. By analysing geospatial data, this study provides critical insights for the sustainable management of Coralligenous ecosystems under current and future environmental pressures.
