This dissertation investigates the relation between the conceptual element, perception, and non-reflective skilled action in the philosophy of John McDowell, with particular focus on the period from Mind and World to the Dreyfus–McDowell debate. It explores two interconnected dimensions of this relation. The first concerns the rational connection between experience and judgment, as McDowell defends it through his conception of experience as conceptually informed and his understanding of rationality as a power with transformative force. The second concerns whether, and in what sense, the conceptual element bears upon non-reflective skilled action. The study examines specific difficulties that arise from McDowell’s claim regarding the “pervasiveness of rationality” within perceptual life. These difficulties pertain to the employment of the notions of second nature and the openness of the subject to a world independent of it, as well as to issues surrounding the justificatory role of experience. Moreover, the dissertation analyses the arguments developed in the Dreyfus–McDowell exchange on the role of rational capacities in practical life and defends the thesis that the practical life of rational animals is intrinsically—and not merely contingently—accessible to the powers of rationality. Failure to uphold this thesis, it is argued, would distort the unity and continuity of self-consciousness in non-reflective action, rendering the connection between animality and rationality unintelligible. This connection depends on a conception of rationality that is neither enclosed nor additive. Finally, the dissertation rejects the view that thought stands as an “enemy” of skillful coping, and argues instead that the conceptual element operates potentially as well as actually.
