The objective of this work is to reverse engineer the WannaCry malware using static analysis techniques and create satisfactory YARA rules for its detection and prevention. First, an introduction is made to the main topics and technologies related to the work and used within its context. More specifically, the types of different malware are described, their characteristics, as well as some of their particularities and evasion techniques, which allow them to remain hidden. Next, the analysis techniques used to combat malware, their advantages, disadvantages and the basic steps followed are presented. Following that, the structure and use of YARA rules is demonstrated. Then, the analysis of WannaCry begins with an explanation of its key features and the malware attack and its timeline. Next, the base WannaCry executable and the executables extracted from it are reverse engineered using the Ghidra tool. After that, based on the results of the above analysis, YARA rules are created to detect the malware. These rules were tested using 27 samples of WannaCry and its variants for their effectiveness.
