Abstract

This thesis introduces the design, development and evaluation of Frame It, a mobile Augmented Reality (AR) application for the purchase of wall art. Frame It is built on the Android platform using Unity and ARCore. The app was designed as a research tool, not a commercial product, and provided a realistic, self-contained AR e-commerce environment in which user behavior could be systematically observed and measured. The research was framed around four research questions, namely, the effect of AR integration on user experience and engagement, the effect of AR integration on purchase intention and perceived uncertainty, the usability problems that emerge during the AR interaction, and the extent to which the interface design enables intuitive navigation and visual coherence. Data were obtained from thirty-three participants through two complementary methods: a structured questionnaire employing a five-point Likert scale and behavioral data automatically recorded via Firebase Analytics during the testing sessions. This study provides empirical insights into the consumer experience of Augmented Reality (AR) e-commerce for wall art, a subject that has received limited systematic attention in existing literature. It also proposes a mixed evaluation framework combining telemetry data with attitudinal measurement, and documents the technical challenges of vertical surface detection and drift on mid-range hardware. The evaluation is based on a Greek user population, adding a local dimension to a field primarily studied in an international context.
