Smartphone notifications are part-and-parcel of everyday interaction with our devices and the services we expect to receive from them. Apps can use notifications to inform the user about new text messages, upcoming events or available updates. Users receive a lot of notifications on their mobile devices in a daily basis, which does not always translate into users' awareness about the delivered information because these notifications might arrive at inappropriate times and situations. Previous work showed that real-time notification delivery is more likely to have adverse effects and become a cause of potential disruption, inducing stress and anxiety, rather than proving beneficial to users. In order to address these challenges it is of paramount importance to understand the mechanism by which people perceive the notifications and decides how to act on them (e.g., rejection, acceptance, postponement). Smartphones have become really important nowadays because they are the main tool for communications and most of people carry them wherever they go. However, sometimes the ringing sound of mobile devices can be annoying in certain circumstances such as during an important meeting or inside places that require silence such as libraries, hospitals, universities, cinemas or prayer areas, because most users forget switching their smartphones into silent mode. Therefore, we need to record the exact locations where users switched ringer mode to silent. The objective of this dissertation is dual. Firstly, contribute to a fuller understanding of the user's decision-making process with respect to incoming notifications. Secondly, to locate the locations where users put their mobile phone in silent mode. For that reason, we developed a simple logging application which works silently as UI-less background process recording notifications on the users’ mobile and the conditions under which they has interfered with the notification (e.g. notification modality, ringer mode, notification importance, current location, activity, third party presence), as well as the locations where they switched ringer mode to silent. We then studied the ability to predict and support user behavior to smartphone notifications using machine learning techniques.el
