| dc.description.translatedabstract | This diploma thesis focuses on the design, development, and experimental proof of concept of an airborne assessment system for evaluating the condition of insulators in high-voltage power transmission networks. The system aims to detect the corona discharge phenomenon through an acoustic method using an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone). Reliable monitoring of insulators is essential to maintain the operational integrity and safety of Electric Power Systems, as corona discharge can cause significant insulation degradation, energy losses, and electromagnetic interference. The thesis begins with an analysis of the importance of insulators and the various monitoring methods, emphasizing the advantages of aerial platforms, particularly drones, which offer flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and reduced risk for personnel. It then presents the physical explanation, development mechanism, and consequences of the corona phenomenon, as well as the available detection techniques. Among them, the acoustic method stands out as one of the most promising solutions due to its simplicity, low cost, and compatibility with lightweight and autonomous platforms. The study proceeds with the design and implementation of a sound detection system adapted for drone integration, including the selection of a suitable microphone, the design of an appropriate preamplifier, and the application of noise reduction techniques. Despite challenges related to unwanted noise from drone rotors or environmental factors, the system proved to be functional and capable of detecting the characteristic frequency spectrum produced by the corona effect. The experimental procedure involved a series of controlled tests with applied high voltage up to 24 kV. The characteristic frequencies of corona discharge in the acoustic domain (50, 100, 150 Hz) were successfully recorded. The system’s performance was evaluated under different conditions, including the presence of rotor noise, transmission method, and microphone orientation. These results confirmed the reliability of the proposed system. Through spectral analysis of the recorded signals, corona activity was successfully identified under real conditions, demonstrating that the method is suitable for preventive maintenance of transmission lines. The thesis concludes with valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of acoustic corona detection in aerial environments and proposes future improvements, such as the use of toroidal rotors for noise reduction and high-performance computing units (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano) for onboard data processing. Finally, the platform development process offered valuable experience in experimentation, technical design, and innovative problemsolving in the field of transmission network monitoring and, more broadly, in Electric Power Systems. | |
