Abstract
This thesis examines how social, economic, but also conflict factors affect military spending within the government budget. Rather than assessing military expenditure as a percentage of GDP, this study looks at its share of total government spending. The study also tests the effect of economic growth, geographical size, and colonial history. It also investigates how democratic governance affects military spending, with the general idea being that democracies will spend less on defense than on social needs. The study additionally examines how different types of conflicts affect military budgets, giving a more in-depth understanding of how countries allocate resources under various limitations.
