Abstract

This thesis discusses the synthesis of a Virtual Rock Climbing Environment. The scene is based on the climbing wall, located within the premises of the Virtualization & Virtual Reality Group of the Wired Communication and Information Technology Laboratory, while being inspired by the Grand Canyon of the United States. For this project, artificial intelligence, computer vision and geometry techniques where utilized for the accurate 3D recreation of the climbing wall. The result is integrated into a virtual environment, developed in Unreal Engine, offering the user a Mixed Reality Experience, where real-world climbing is combined with the immersion in a realistic digital scenery. The movements of the user’s upper and lower limbs are also captured and reproduced digitally. This implementation aims to highlight new ways of human-computer interaction, where Virtual Reality technologies are used to bridge the gap between physical exercising and entertainment. The results of thesis showcase the possibility of harmonically combining computational and artistic methods, with interactive technologies for the creation immersive experiences, leading to a plethora of applications in sports, education or healthcare.
