This diploma thesis deals with the study and construction of a converter from direct-to-direct voltage (DC – DC Converter), which feeds a single-phase inverter, with the purpose of connecting to the low voltage network and controlling the active and reactive power. This work was carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion (LEMEC) and the Laboratory of Power Systems, Renewable and Distributed Generation, of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Patras. The purpose is the study and design of a Bidirectional Buck-Boost converter, which works in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) acting as a current source. This converter is connected to a Single-Phase Full Bridge Inverter, which acts as an Unfolding Inverter. The goal is to successfully connect to the low voltage grid and inject active and reactive power by accurately varying the power factor by imposing a specific phase difference between the grid voltage and the generated current. First, some data on modern European energy needs are reported and the theoretical function background of the two converters is presented. Their operating logic is analyzed, and the dimensioning of the overall arrangement is mathematically calculated. Then, the system under study is simulated in the Matlab/Simulink programming environment, in order to establish the correct operation. Also, the closed-loop control is analyzed, in which the output power follows specific reference values by varying the reference output current itself. After that follows the process of manufacturing the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) of the bidirectional Buck – Boost converter, as well as all the supporting boards that were needed. Some basic design rules are recorded, as are all the equipment used. Finally, the overall experimental setup is analyzed. The obtained experimental results are presented and it is studied whether they agree with the expected ones and with those of the simulation.
