The aim of this thesis is to explore the fuzzing technique and evaluate itseffectiveness in discovering vulnerabilities in open-source software. The study beginswith an overview of fuzzing as a software security testing method, highlighting itssignificance in identifying unknown bugs (zero-day vulnerabilities) and its critical role inthe modern cyber security landscape. Subsequently, the focus shifts to AFL++(American Fuzzy Lop Plus Plus), an advanced and widely adopted coverage-guidedfuzzing framework. In the practical part of the thesis, an older version of Xpdf, a popular opensource Pdf reader, is selected for analysis. Using AFL++, fuzzing is conducted with theobjective of detecting the known vulnerability CVE-2019-13288. The process ofinstallation, configuration, execution, and result analysis is described in detail, alongwith an in-depth examination of the vulnerability reproduction and its impact on theapplication's stability. Finally, the thesis presents conclusions regarding the practical efficiency offuzzing and suggests future directions for improving vulnerability discovery processes inopen-source applications.
