This thesis deals with topological groups through a historical and theoretical approach, with the main aim of highlighting the relationship between Topology and Group Theory. Through a narrative-style bibliographic review, the historical development of topology and abstract algebra is presented first to clarify the mathematical framework in which the concept of the topological group was formed. Then, the basic concepts of topology are developed, including topological spaces, neighbourhoods, convergence, continuity, compactness, and connectedness, as well as the fundamental concepts of group theory, including groups, subgroups, normal subgroups, homomorphisms, and cyclic groups. The work then focuses on topological groups as structures where algebraic operations are compatible with topology through continuity. Particular emphasis is given to closed subgroups, metrizability, connectedness, compact and locally compact groups. In conclusion, topological groups emerge as fundamental mathematical structures that connect symmetry, continuity, and analysis in a unified theoretical framework.
