The present study focuses on the meta-analysis and description of sponge fishing in Greece, primarily during the mid-20th century, and examines the evolution of this industry on social, economic, and environmental levels. Special emphasis is given to sponge fishing as a traditional activity of the Greek islands, particularly in Kalymnos, which became the center of sponge fishing operations. Kalymnos emerged as a leading hub for sponge fishing from the 19th century, with its sponge divers traveling as far as the coasts of North Africa to collect high-quality sponges. Sponge fishing was a fundamental pillar of Kalymnos' economy. The revenues from sponge fishing supported thousands of families and led to the creation of local workshops for sponge processing. However, the emergence of synthetic sponges in the 1960s, along with overfishing and environmental pollution, resulted in a dramatic decline in production. During the 1970s and 1980s, many divers abandoned the profession and turned to tourism or other occupations. Today, sponge fishing is almost extinct, with only a few active sponge fishing boats remaining.
