The aim of this thesis is to determine how and to what extent the articulation space of vowels is affected by the phonetic environment, in typical male speakers aged 18-23 years. 15 participants were recorded in various activities, including isolated vowel production, syllables repetition, CVCV pseudoword repetion, in stressed and unstressed conditions, and sentence repetition. The audio files, were analysed using PRAAT software and the first three fromant frequencies, F1, F2 and F3, which signal tongue position during vowel articulation, were measured for each of the five Greek vowels. Additionally the Greek vowel space was measured via three different indices, namely the VSA (vowel space area), the FCR (formant centralization ratio) and the VAI (vowel articulation index). Overall, fidnings were in agreement with the available normative data. However, what emerged from the results of the analyses is that in all vowels other than /i/, the phonological environment affects articulation, which is evident from the values of the first three modifiers, especially F1 which decreases as the production environment increases. In particular, it is higher when the vowel is produced in isolation, and gradually decreases for other activities.
