| dc.description.translatedabstract | The present thesis focuses on the development of a comprehensive methodological approach for the detection, isolation, and physicochemical characterization of Tire Wear Particles (TWPs), which constitute one of the most critical and environmentally harmful categories of emerging microplastics. TWPs are generated during the mechanical friction between tires and the road surface, releasing complex elastomeric particles into the environment that carry a multitude of organic and inorganic additives. Due to their complex chemical composition and the presence of carbon black, their isolation and quantification using conventional methods present significant technical challenges, making the development of innovative and viable analytical approaches imperative. In the first stage of the research, a study and characterization of recycled tire samples as well as particles from environmental samples (road dust and beach sediments) were conducted. To determine their morphology, size, and elemental composition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed in combination with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and coal petrography microscopy. The identification of the polymer matrix and elastomers (such as natural rubber NR and synthetic rubber SBR/BR) was carried out via Raman Spectroscopy and Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy enabled the differentiation of the characteristic bands of amorphous carbon black and polymer chains, despite the strong fluorescence background. The innovative part of the thesis focused on the setup and optimization of a novel, sensitive fluorescence method for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of TWPs. For this purpose, the solvatochromic fluorescent dye Nile Red (NR) was utilized. The study of the system was conducted using Fluorescence Spectrophotometry. The fluorescence intensity exhibited a good linear correlation with the concentration of tire wear particles, demonstrating good sensitivity and reliability. In conclusion, this research significantly contributes to environmental analytical chemistry, demonstrating that the combination of advanced microscopic/spectroscopic techniques (SEM-EDS, Raman, IR) with the Nile Red fluorescence method enables the complete physicochemical mapping and accurate determination of TWP particles in the environment, paving the way for more effective environmental monitoring programs and legislative regulation. | |
