| dc.description.translatedabstract | The present study attempts to identify the elements that constitute the expression of the fantastic and the supernatural within the three periods of Greek Comedy, namely the Old, the Middle and the New. The fantastic and the supernatural (concepts often interrelated and not mutually exclusive) are inextricably linked to the so-called heterocosmos, utopia, improbability and extravagance. Their presence is evident throughout the ages in comic works, which demonstrates the coherence and continuity of the literary genre of comedy. The figures of speech that poets exploit (such as personifications), the deep parody and recategorization by linking the mocked ones to incredible mythical creatures, the inventiveness in conceiving improbable plots, the telling of outrageous Munchausen-type stories, the world of perfection of the Golden Age of Saturn, the comic locus of the catalogue of abundant goods, and the incredible coincidences and twists in the lives of comic heroes, are all indications of a strong presence of the fantastic and/or supernatural in comedy in general. | |
