This diploma thesis deals with the experimental implementation of a Virtual SynchronousGenerator (VSG). The study focuses on the design and development of an experimental system that emulates the operation of a synchronous generator by employing virtual inertia. Specifically, the control strategy is applied to a three-phase inverter connected between the DC-link and the load. The aim of this method is to analyze the dynamic response and the ability of the synchronous generator to contribute to the stabilization and balance of frequency after sudden load changes, thereby ensuring system stability, providing inertia, smoothing disturbances, and improving power quality. Initially, the importance of renewable energy sources is highlighted, and the main challenges associated with their integration into the power system are presented, particularly under conditions of increased distributed generation and microgrid development. Subsequently, the circuit components and the mathematical tools used for the study are described, such as the Park transformation, control theory principles, and network parameterization techniques, supported by the relevant literature. The work then proceeds with the theoretical investigation of the proposed circuit and the design of the corresponding controllers based on the dynamic equations. For this purpose, a simulation of the system was developed and implemented, where scenarios with resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads were examined, as well as cases of varying virtual inertia. In addition, the contribution of integral frequency control was assessed, along with the application of a dynamic inertia control scheme, aiming at improving both transient and steady state performance. Subsequently, experimental measurements were carried out under real operating conditions using the Typhoon HIL 404 hardware, and the main conclusions were derived. Finally, directions for future research are proposed.
