The scope of this thesis is the design of a metamaterial patch antenna for pneumothorax detection. The metamaterial is incorporated in the ground plane of the antenna to achieve miniaturization. Pneumothorax is the abnormal concentration of air in the pleural cavity between the lung and the chest wall. The goal of this project is to develop a compact, wearable, and low-cost antenna system that will be used for the abnormality diagnosis. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to reduce the size of the antenna and thus a complementary split ring resonator is placed on the ground of the antenna. The final antenna has a resonance at 1.4 GHz and has a bandwidth of 1.14 GHz. For simulation purposes, a cuboid thorax model is used that consists of three layers of human tissue: skin, fat and lung. Finally, measurements are taken with two and then four antennas around the torso in the case of pneumothorax. All simulations are conducted using ANSYS HFSS environment.el
