The present undergraduate thesis investigates the morphological differences between the species Callanthias ruber and Anthias anthias, as well as their otoliths, focusing on identifying the most significant morphometric variables for their discrimination. Although the two species are classified into different orders, Spariformes and Perciformes respectively, this study examines the possibility of distinguishing them through morphometrics and otolithometry as a complementary or alternative approach to the use of meristic characters. The sample was collected from the geographical sub-areas GSA 20 and GSA 22 during August, within the frame of MEDITS survey of the National Fisheries Data Collection Programme. The methodology included taking morphological and anatomical measurements on both the specimens and their otoliths. The analysis highlighted the vertical and horizontal mouth opening (Ventral Mouth Opening, Horizontal Mouth Opening), body depth (Body Depth), and otolith length (Otolith Length) as the main discriminating variables. The Standard Length/Body Depth (SL/BD) ratio constituted a strong diagnostic point. In conclusion, this study provides a systematic recording of the variables that shape the morphological identity of the two species and lays the groundwork for future research towards exploring the possibility of creating an identification key based exclusively on morphometric data.
