The current thesis focuses on the development and evaluation of the “synchronverter” control method for power converters, aiming to emulate the behavior of synchronous generators and provide virtual inertia to modern power systems. The introductory part presents the energy framework and the current challenges associated with the energy transition, with emphasis on the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the consequent reduction of mechanical inertia in the grids. The importance of stability is analyzed, along with the classification of instability phenomena (angle, voltage, and frequency stability) and the role of inertia in frequency response. Subsequently, the mathematical models and operating principles of the synchronous generator and power converters are developed, which establish the theoretical foundation upon which the synchronverter is built. Thereafter, the structure of the power circuit and the controllers are described in detail. Different control strategies are presented for operation in grid-connected mode (Droop Control, Power Setpoint) as well as in stand-alone mode with isolated loads (P–f and Q–v control loops). Particular emphasis is placed on the control strategy of virtual inertia, aiming to optimize the frequency response following a disturbance. The simulation studies carried out in MATLAB/Simulink follow, designed to investigate and understand the system’s behavior both in grid-connected operation and in stand-alone operation with load. Finally, the controller design was evaluated under real operating conditions through the use of the Typhoon HIL 404 hardware platform and a physical power circuit. The experimental results are presented and analyzed, confirming the correct operation of the controller. The thesis concludes with the main findings and suggestions for future research.
