Air pollution is one of the most serious problems facing humanity in recent years. Suspended particles make a significant contribution to air pollution. Their effects on human health, but also their effect on various atmospheric phenomena, have made it imperative to measure their concentrations and take measures to comply with the limits provided by the National and European legislation. In this postgraduate thesis, the concentration of suspended particles in background areas (non-urban) is examined, specifically in Linaria in Skyros island, in Livadi village near Thessaloniki and the in the area of University of Patra. The theoretical part of the work describes the Earth's atmosphere, its composition and its vertical structure. Then there is a reference to air pollution, its sources and the category of pollutants. This is followed by the presentation of suspended particles, their sources and mechanisms of creation, their species and composition, their classification into categories, the legislated limits of their concentrations and finally their effects on human health, the environment and the climate. The development of the theoretical part closes with the reference to air quality, air pollution indicators and what is happening with the problem in Greece. In the Experimental part, a statistical analysis of the measurements of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 suspended particles from the three observation stations is made, as well as a comparison between them.
