Abstract

Modern telecommunications networks are responsible for transmitting a huge amount of information, between data centers, using optical fibers, to support the continuously rising needs of consumers. However, each year the average data being sent keeps increasing, thus requiring higher and higher speeds for the network to keep up. And while the technologies used are scalable, the power consumption of certain components is prohibitive for further increases in data rates and their complexity is an additional problem. This thesis studies the use of an intensity modulated direct-detection (IM-DD) dual polarization PAM-4 scheme, which could be used instead of a QAM scheme, in short distance links, while avoiding the use of expensive DSP components at the receiver. The simulation results presented in this thesis are made with the help of the VPI Design Suite program.
