This study examines the expression of the specific and non-specific functions in Standard Modern Greek, which are originally expressed by the existential quantifier kápjos and the polarity item kanénas respectively. The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive description of the semantic and syntactic characteristics of the two pronouns, and to demonstrate that the expression of specificity is not determined by the pronoun itself, but by the co-occurring syntactic environment. The study includes cross-linguistic data to position Standard Modern Greek within the typological framework of specificity while incorporating diachronic insights, particularly focusing on the grammaticalization process of the ka(n)- series. As evidenced by synchronic data, each novel form emerging at every stage of grammaticalization has been retained within the synchronic system, a development with significant implications for the semanticο-syntactic expression of specificity. The analysis identifies five distinct semanticο-syntactic pronominal entities, each fulfilling a specific grammatical role. The recategorization of pronouns, according to their function and the syntactic environment in which they appear, sheds light on potential diachronic and typological implications, which warrant further investigation.
